Review of The Bird People in China (1998) by Bernadette C — 04 Jan 2008
I watched this because I want to have all of Takashi Miike's babies, but I could hardly believe that this was one of his films. It definitely had some of his recognizeable humor, but there was a distinct lack of claymation, dancing zombies, freakish lactation, demons with cowheads, or supposedly dead adults being birthed from themselves after they've turned into women.
Nevertheless, it was a shockingly good movie and I appreciated it for what it was, and it has made me love this director a little bit more now that I know he can make both indescribably disturbing movies and delightful fairy tales.
