Review of Tears of April (2008) by Renato L — 23 Sep 2008
For a good 20 minutes the film ties you to the chair with a blank stare as you witness the horrors of a civil war, the killings, the gutwrenching rape scene and the cold blooded execution of POWs. As the movie progresses, we witness the inner struggle of a soldier caught between his duty and the attraction he feels toward the enemy prisoner.
The movie however is not only a love story, but it sheds some light on one of the most cruel point in finnish history, the civil war of 1918, which is still to certain extent a taboo in Finland today.
Definitely one of the best finnish movie I've ever seen to date, on a par with Kaurismäki's late efforts.
