A western viewer like myself might find it hard to take the internal moral conflict of the protagonist seriously, given that the highest moral commitment I have is to my own idiosyncratic causes. As for the observant Muslim character in question, he is dedicated to the strict precepts of his religion (articulated in the Koran, but read with latitude by his associates according to self interest).

Muharrem's inability to parse his faith with his "worldly" dealings (as a property manager for a local religious leader) throws up the tensions between modern life and traditional religion.

When Muharrem finally sacrifices his sanity in the attempt to work out this conflict, this western viewer kept wondering, "What for?".
