Review of Syndromes and a Century (2006) by Lynn L — 13 Jan 2008
A film so steeped in imagery, metaphor and mood that it challenges you in a good way, an entertaining way; in an attempt to cinematically realize his parents falling in love, AW examines a buffet of themes: industrial isolation, the past and the future and how they collectively play into the present, perception and an evolving spirituality; most astonishingly it's a love story about two people who barely get to that inevitable point in the picture where the will share a moment with mutual intention.
The narrative is seemingly asymptotic, until a single fleeting shot suggests otherwise. I don't know, I think this is the movie Matthew Barney tries to make but quite can't get past the pretension to do so with real emotional resonance.
This is the real deal.
