Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) by Sven T — 10 May 2008
Admittedly, this caters to a niche of broadway fans, however Stephen Sondheim's genius is much more evident in this filmed 'stage version' of the show.
Angela Lansbury and George Hearn are true Broadway legends, and for good reason. Their vocal performance is pitch-perfect, unlike that of Johnny Depp.
With that said, viewers should keep in mind that this is (as was intended) a 'stage show'. Do not expect fancy Hollywood special effects.
Luckily, also, you won't have to suffer through any of Tim Burton's excessive blood and gore.
