Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Adryan G — 11 Dec 2008
I'm a long time fan of Miikae's , which is odd considering that I don't generally like horror films. This movie, perhaps his most linear to date, is brilliant, although certainly more of a game he's playing with Tarantino than a true Miike original.
Watching this film somewhat reminds me of The Five Obstructions, in which two directors get together to challenge one another's conventions. Fans of either director may not enjoy the film, (Miike is playing it far too conservative and Tarantino is experimenting with subtlty) but fans of both should find it gratifying.
Trying to trace all the inter-textual references could make for a great drinking game.
