Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Mark S — 17 Aug 2015
This is a sneaky good movie. It creeps up on you and pulls you in before you know it. The premise of the movie is not original (is any movie at this point??) but executes it very nicely. A recently divorced mom (Melissa McCarthy NOT playing the funny lady and doing quite nicely) needs a babysitter for her 12 year old son. Vincent (Bill Murray) steps in, begrudgingly... but for the money, and teaches the kid the ways of the world. Murray is a mess, ornery, he drinks to much, gambles and his only personal relationship is with a lady of the night. But...maybe there's more to him...just maybe. He gives the kid nuggets along the way and everyone's life changes a bit.
Here's the thing...you should see this movie because of Murray. It's a great part for him and he hits it out of the park. In the end, it's a sweet movie with well rounded characters, a familiar story with acerbic flavoring. You'll dig it. See it.
