Review of Splash (1984) by Adam R — 22 Jun 2014
Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah becomes stars via Ron Howard. Bonus points for John Candy endorsing Penthouse Magazine, causing Disney to have a hissy fit! Back then, Tom Hanks was a cross-dressing sitcom actor, John Candy & Eugene Levy were known as Second City regulars, director Ron Howard was better known as Richie Cunningham and Daryl Hannah was an unknown.
The film's semi-endorsement of Penthouse magazine and Hannah's brief bare bottom caused a furor for Disney. But the film itself, especially the moving innocence of Alan & Madison's romance, is transcendent.
It's impossible not to be moved. One of the Eighties best romantic comedies and a classic that launched several careers. Essential.
