Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Dustin M — 18 Nov 2009
It is more of a statement movie rather than trying to tell a story. I loved it. It's prefect because that's the way I've felt about the book of Revelations, and that's all this movie really is: a retelling of revelations.
But everything comes together and there is an explanation for everything. Kelly uses every single visual and word to explain what he's trying to say. The world doesn't end in a bang, but in a whimper.
It's what some other films aspire to do, but never reach. There are a ton of comical moments in the film, but it these moments also feel uneasy. We know that something is happening beneath the surface, and it could easily happen to us one day.
The only thing left I can say is that Kelly is a beautiful filmmaker.
