It is difficult to describe a film that is so explicit and yet so completely unvulgar and unobjectifying. If you think for a moment that Mitchell's motivation is the old "sex sells" saying, forget about it.
He has so much respect for his characters that you almost forget that what you're seeing could ever be used in a cheap or trashy way. Shortbus has more substance and less lewdness than most movies I've seen that show a lot less.
