Review of Senso (1954) by Gianni V — 21 May 2010
An operatic love story set against the backdrop of what was apparently the sexiest war ever waged, the italian-austrian war of unification. the production is opulent and gorgeously captures the romance of a simultaneously thriving and crumbling venice in 1866.
farley granger, (with a dubbed italian voice several octaves below his own) is disastrously attractive, and there are points where the film feels dangerously close to being 'period porn.' it's so over the top, yet fully committed.
contains thematic echoes of 'lola montes' with granger as the miscreant. it's the cover of a romance novel come to life.
