Review of Sans Soleil (1983) by Ahmed K — 03 Mar 2008
Sort of a film poem partly about Japan, Africa and nature rituals but also about memory and the relationship between film and memory. So ,you guessed it, its French and a bit pretentious but has some amazing images and some of the ideas stick with you long after the film finishes.
Not for everyone obviously but worth a look if you're curious. best bit is the anamatronic rubber JFK in a Japanese department store that recites the "ask not what your country..." speech with the same speech put to Japanese pop music in the background.
Oh and it appears to have what I think is footage from the Awa Odori dance festival in the fair city of Tokushima (where I used to live).
