Review of Reds (1981) by Nick K — 23 Mar 2008
Pretty much a masterpiece, but obviously for a specialized audience. I love the real "witnesses" he sprinkled throughout the film-- people who knew and lived through the time. REDS only recently came out on DVD-- last year I think.
I taped it off HBO in the 80s and watched it a hundred times. What an amazing slice of history, though some were upset that Louis Bryant was portrayed as a bad writer. It captures the idealism of early Marxists in the West.
Beatty won Academy Award for Best Director.
