Review of Redbelt (2008) by Sam S — 21 Mar 2009
Actions and reactions are the name of Mamet's game here. Don't let the incredibly diverse cast and big names fool you...this is Chiwetel Ejiofor's movie through and through, with everyone else playing characters that serve to help propel Ejiofor's Mike Terry through to the finale, which is nothing short of cathartic and fist-pumping.
Everything that happens in the movie, which is one of the most specifically and thoughtfully made movies I've seen in a while, occurs as a consequence to a previous action. I didn't feel like I was watching a scripted movie, but rather a life unfolding in front of my eyes.
Actions, and reactions. There's nothing more human than that.
