Like Rocky, the story is really about the fighter, not the fighting. I found the internal struggle of the main character to be fascinating - an honorable man, living in an dishonorable world, and the price he must pay to retain his integrity... a powerful, tragic story.
While The fight scenes were a little more realistic than a lot of action movies, viewers looking for an "action" movie may be disappointed.
