Review of Phase IV (1974) by Jt K — 27 Jul 2012
Avant-garde take on the "nature run a muck" sub-genre that was so prevalent in the 70's, as a colony of super-intelligent ants go toe-to-toe with a pair of scientist in the desert. The first (and only) film directed by Saul Bass, it is visually surreal with utterly amazing photography, especially of the 6-legged antagonists (i can't imagine how pain-staking it must have been to shoot this movie).
But be forewarned: those expecting a grungy, drive-in exploitation picture will be crushingly disappointed; Phase IV is more concerned with trippy shot composition and obscure storytelling than bloodshed and mayhem.
