Review of Performance (1970) by Stephen D — 12 Jul 2007
A complex and rewarding film about identity, not just those of the two central characters, but of the very film itself:is it a gangster film?, a druggy rock star film?, a teenage rebellion film?, actually its all of the above and more. A richly rewarding film in its own right, Performance now serves as an item of cultural geography, pinpointing an exact period in the late 60s when it became apparent that the vision of peace and love was not all its cracked up to be.
I can not recommend this film highly enough to anyone with an open mind and appreciation of not just good cinema but great art as well.
