Review of Painted Skin (1993) by Mattias E — 02 Nov 2010
After leaving the Shaw Brothers, King Hu's movies became even more operatic in an attempt to develop the visual storytelling of the wuxia genre. His last movie, Painted Skin from 1992, is no exception.
Although rendered hopelessly out of date at the time of it's release, when former new wave director Tsui Hark's wild antics ruled the wuxia scene, it's visual beauty and gentle approach can still be appreciated.
The action in Painted Skin is almost completely subordinate to the director's sense of taoist aesthetics and spiritual matters. Respect the King.
