Review of Other People (2016) by Spencer K — 18 Sep 2016
What could've easily been another foray into somber melodrama, Other People goes far away from that and in turns is a sweet yet tragic look into familial dynamics, that's smart, touching, that approaches it sad subject with charming subtlety.
Jesse Plemons gives a fantastic performance as David, a gay writer from New York who goes back to his hometown of Sacramento to care for his mother who has been diagnosed with cancer. playing his mother, is the brilliant Molly Shannon.
she gives one of the best performances of her career here. she's absolutely amazing in her role and completely embodies it. the script is wonderfully written and it balances sad and funny moments together without being tonally awkward.
it's definitely not a good time at the movies, but it's a rewarding one.
