Review of OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009) by Clara Joyce D — 12 Nov 2009
The "Naked Gun" and "Austin Powers" movies may edge it in the gags-per-minute stakes, but Hazanavicius is still capable of tremendously silly throwaway moments, like a National Socialist rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema", or Agent 117's floundering attempts to roast a crocodile.
The hero's consistent stupidity actually allows the film around him to be smarter and funnier about certain uncomfortable aspects of French history than you might expect. Informed by his superiors that the microfilm he's looking for contains the names of high-profile collaborators, 117's response is exactly that of a staunch Gaullist: "No wonder it's 'micro' - must be a very small list.
".
