Review of On the Road (2014) by Steven B — 27 Mar 2013
It's kind of hard watching this movie and keeping in mind it is a film adaptation of Kerouc's novel and not the story of Kerouc and Neal Cassidy. Kerouc's novel is undeniably autobiographical, but it does gloss over some parts of the relationship he had with Cassidy.
All in all this being the first, and probably only, attempt to make the novel into a film, rip-offs about the 'beat' generation aside, and it worked for me just fine. I'm not entirely impressed with the casting, but there you go.
This was directed by the Brazilian Walter Salles who made 'The Motorcycle Diaries' and it shows. A lot of similar scenes here. The film is beautiful and really captures the United States and Northern Mexico as seen from two lane roads.
All in all if you are, like me, familiar with the story you'll enjoy this; otherwise you might be befuddled and that's alright as well.
