Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Mark J — 20 Nov 2011
Finally got round to seeing this wonderful film, and wasn't disappointed. Of Gods & Men is based on a real incident from 1996 in Algeria when eight Trappist monks had to make a decision about whether or not to leave their monastery in the face of brutal intimidation from Islamic fundamentalists.
Needless to say this did not have a happy ending. It was a story that gripped the people of France (and explains why this did so well at the French box office), but hardy noticed by the rest of the world; yet here are the seeds of 9/11 so eloquently expressed and without any heavy handed preaching.
A skillful slow burner with an air of foreboding, Of Gods and Men shouldn't just appeal to those with a religious bias - even this old atheist found it very moving.
