Review of North Dallas Forty (1979) by Steve B — 17 Jan 2011
Nice to squeeze in one more football movie before the season ends. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore. The 70's sure seemed like a groovy time, huh? Pretty obvious that the team/story are loosely based on the Dallas Cowboys, and with the ability of hindsight, in more ways than they probably ever could have imagined.
It's a little dated, of course, but no less the classic it is considered to be. Certainly even moreso in these parts. It's too bad there is only one significant game scene in the whole film, b/c it is superbly crafted, especially for its time.
And there are some really great laugh out loud moments. The pre-game locker room scene is worth the watch by itself. The ending scenes are some of the finest work I've ever seen Nolte engaged in. Good stuff all around.
