Review of Nixon (1995) by Lauren J — 15 Jul 2007
My one-word review of this film would be "Shakespearean." Nixon was such a tragic figure, haunted by so many demons: his demanding parents, his dead siblings, his Quaker faith, his non-elite background, his ugliness, etc.
, etc... he had greatness within his grasp, as Kissinger says in the film, but his Macbethian lust for power was his undoing. There is no one better than Oliver Stone when it comes to depicting 20th-century history; his use of real documentary footage, documentary-style re-enactments and shifts in color and film format, as well as his command of music and symbolism, make his work absolutely jaw-dropping when he's on top of his game.
