Review of Nickelodeon (1976) by Jeff O — 20 Jun 2009
In many ways, this feels like a warm-up to Bogdanovich's far superior (in my mind) "What's Up, Doc?" This is a little odd, since Nickelodeon came out 4 years after "Doc". Still, both movies have mixed up luggage, rooms catching fire, food fights, and lots of screwball comedy.
The problem is that "Doc" does it all much better. "Nickelodeon" tries hard to be many things at once, but it never quite gets the balance right. By the time we get to the heavy-handed reminder of why we all love movies so much at the end ("tiny pieces of time"), it may be spot on, but it doesn't feel earned.
