Review of Neruda (2016) by Jon Z — 22 Jan 2017
Definitely not your standard biopic of an artist. The film manages to be elliptical and tense, high minded and funny at the same time. It skewers art and politics, while pointing to the necessary transcendent nature of art (even if the art and artists are full it).
Playful, magical, and mournful, without any of the trace of smaltz or sophomoric pretentiousness that is usually associated with those terms.
