Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Smarty S — 11 Nov 2007
This is a really profound film.... that in it's entirety it is a dialog, sparsely interrupted, between two men is very interesting: that the conversation, as it builds over the course of an extended meal can be so captivating, is interesting.
It's the most simple construct and it frames a rich exploration of the meaning and meaninglessness of life. My reaction was tepid for the first 20 minutes or so as their conversation warmed and found rhythm.
In the end it resonated so strong: well articulating the many pitfalls of the typical Western existence, the crisis of our individual and collective humanity. Makes one think about the time investing in faux socializations such as facebook.
I hope that it will inspire me to real acts of community building and interaction. If it doesn't, I may have to watch it again.
