Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Jussi T — 03 Feb 2008
Something to really fall in love with! I would describe this as perfect cinema: it captures a single moment (in this case, a dinner conversation) with truth and emotion. There's just a flow -- a tangible feel of visual present tense, if you will.
The cinematography is a masterclass in economic shot construction and the "performances" are completely transparent. The subject matter also never fails to interest, but the true beauty is in the medium: the portrayal of human interaction with all its unexpected turns, rambling monologues and uncomfortable silences.
