Review of Moonwalker (1988) by Private U — 21 Apr 2008
Smooth Criminal.
It is great to see this now on DVD. However at first I thought it wasn't the film I remembered, as countless tasteless scenes of fainting, hysterical fans at concerts played out. But eventually it was worth watching for the pure nostalgia of strange memories of dancing rabbits, robots and crazy cartoon tourists. But above all it is the song and film sequence for Smooth Criminal. It grabs me completely every time; it has got to be the best MJ piece ever, alone worth the high rating. It?s also great as a showcase for his earliest stuff, when you are just overwhelmed by the realization of what a prodigious talent he was from such a young age. It?s a shame his music has faded so much recently and even he wasn't able to make his own wish come true, that his private life be left alone. But whatever you think of him, his musical talent it without doubt genius.
