Review of Moebius (2013) by Matthew S — 28 Oct 2014
Certainly not for all tastes, but Ki-duk Kim's experimental film explores the connection between family, sin, betrayal, vengeance and sexuality in one of the most uncomfortable and disturbing dark comedies I've ever seen.
Thoughout the movie, ideas around identity, pain and the inability to achieve sexual pleasure are constantly being compared to the choice of death. Is life worth more than pleasure? Do the sins of the father and mother always come back to the child? In a family, why do choices and decisions play out over and over again as if on a loop? A sort of absurdist take on the Greek tragedy.
While the film is essentially metaphorical -- or perhaps allegorical -- it is not easy to watch. But that does not mean it isn't worth experiencing.
