Review of Mo' Better Blues (1990) by Jonathan D — 22 Jul 2007
I love the way all of Spike Lee's films look. IMO, he uses the screen as a canvas on which he paints beautiful, striking, colorful images. This film is not his strongest, but it is a very interesting film about a talented jazz musician trying to stay faithful to his music and at the same time maintain his relationships with friends. The story is somewhat jumbled, but it pays off well near the end. The epilogue at the very end feels awkward, but it's also a pleasant way to tell the end of the story.
But really, I cannot stress enough how amazing the film looks. Spike Lee's use of color and dramatic camerawork is amazing.
