Review of Mission Blue (2014) by John T — 17 Aug 2014
So, after six decades of playing in the ocean and jet setting around the world for science, Sylvia Earle has decided to dedicate herself to saving it. This doc is far too focused on Earle's career, considering it title.
I expected a serious doc on the peril of our oceans, but this is really about Earle's role a women in a male dominated field. I don't think this doc really knows what it is. There are occasional forays into more serious subject matter, but the most part it's a biographical documentary.
Granted, she's very accomplished and passionate about her field of study, but that is not what I wanted to watch. The director is could've been serious discussion of what is going on but we are instead only given morsels of seriousness.
The director is trying to make a very serious topic something fun and fabulous. It's too bad someone as accomplished as this is not given the opportunity to really lay it on the line.
