Review of Misery (1990) by Brett H — 26 Sep 2014
Fantastic suspense from the brilliant mind of Stephen King and the sure-handed direction from Rob Reiner! Kathy Bates is truly menacing here and her psychotic performance of an obsessed fan will stand the test of time, the more you learn of her past, the more frightening she becomes.
James Caan is also fantastic playing the vulnerable writer trying to outwit his captor and he really sells the pain and struggle of his character. The film is absolutely solid, keeping the tension raised throughout and watching Annie's mood turn on a dime is quite exhilarating! The famous "hobbeling" scene is still hard to watch and there's plenty of other nail-biting moments.
Definitely one of the best Stephen King adaptations that achieves so much, with so little!
