Review of Mind Game (2004) by Chris P — 16 Nov 2008
A mind fuck in every sense of the word, this stunning animated film from the great Studio 4°C is a must-see for fans of the medium. The story is fantastic, and the execution is unbelievable. The main character, Nishi, dies (quite horribly) in the beginning of the film and forces his way back from the afterlife to the land of the living.
And then shit gets weird. What's great about Mind Game is that even though the whole thing is batshit insane, I could still relate to the characters, especially Nishi, a twenty-something whose life is currently not to his liking.
If nothing else, the film sends out a strong Zen-like message of turning even the worst situation into the best possible one for you. If that means spending a prolonged period of time finding yourself with the woman you love, her sister, and an old misplaced yakuza in a whale's innards, then so be it.
