Review of Mephisto (1981) by Jason Y — 12 Apr 2005
VHS First Viewing, 2 Szabo films seen.
I really wish that the video store down the street had more than just the dubbed version of Mephisto. Reading the subtitles would have made for an extremely more satisfying experience. Hearing the overdubbed voices really makes it hard to pay complete attention. The rise of Nazism was brilliantly depicted through the eyes of an actor in this film. It showed the rise of facism instead of its aftermath. This is something that is not done enough, especially not from the German perspective. Great film!
