Review of Martyrs (2008) by Arnobio Q — 01 Oct 2010
Martyrs is, by far, the best horror film of the past decade. Part of the french new wave horror movement, this movie will test your endurance and shake you to the core. The first 40 minutes play out like a typical American horror film.
But after the first plot twist, you will be left dumbfounded and terrified. Overall, I would describe this film as "the thinking man's Hostel." The gore in Martyrs will sicken you. However, the ideology behind Martyrs will haunt you for years.
This film proves that concepts can be much more terrifying than violence. In a genre permeated by tired remakes and cliched gorefests, Martyrs is a maverick and a reminder of what the horror industry used to produce.
And if you can take a bath after seeing this film, than you're much braver than I am (see the film and you'll know what I mean).
