"Maniac" is a gritty, gruesome tale of a deranged man who was abused as a child. It's a movie that has a grim realism to it and has aged far better than other slasher movies of the early 80s due to its "documentary" style of camera work.
Sure, it's a gory and violent film, but a very good one at that. Joe Spinell is absolutely convincing in his role as the titular Maniac.
