Review of M. Butterfly (1993) by Eric G — 29 Nov 2009
A story in the background of Mao's ruling is probably better told by modern Chinese directors like Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and the like. Albeit its incredulity, "M. Butterfly" is a great real-life story that deserves more aesthetic precision and accuracy in its making.
In that case, the film might probably end up an epic film following the footsteps of "The Last Emperor" or "Farewell, My Concubine". If not for all the loose ends apparent in the film, the excellent performances of John Lone and Jeremy Irons might be duly rewarded.
Note an interesting dialogue between the two on how a white man fantasizes about a romance with an Asian woman, but he would never sympathize the same between an Asian man and a white woman.
