Review of Lore (2012) by Michael F — 29 Jun 2013
LORE is a stunning motion picture. Like a raw slap in the face that posits us directly in the point of view of a young teen age girl abandoned by her Nazi parents and sent off on a cross-Germany journey with her four young siblings.
Dealing with questions of guilt, group bigotry, and human coldness, LORE imagines a world where there are no rules, no humanity, just survival. Director Cate Shortland does a brilliant job adapting just one of three stories from writer Rachel Seiffert's novel THE DARK ROOM.
LORE is perfect in every way until a final coda that perhaps explains a bit too much. But that a very short quip compared to the disjointed and extraordinary work that slaps and streams for 100 minutes.
LORE is filmmaking of the highest order and a great way to enter the year 2013 in film.
