Review of Listening (2015) by Tvnewsguido — 11 Sep 2015
It's an interesting concept executed in a mildly annoying fashion.
The central idea, our "surveillance society" taken to the nth degree, is a good one. The idea that a struggling garage tech startup could go horribly wrong isn't so very farfetched and makes for a compelling story.
The overly angsty and mundane relationship drama threaded throughout is dull and unnecessary. It weighs down the second act and wrecks what might have been an intriguing sci-fi thriller.
Added to the narrative issues is the writer/director's use of colored filters (like Traffic but without a clear point) and overreliance on the close-up shots during rather dull and passionless conversations.
Overall the film takes itself far too seriously which is a pity because it is very clever in concept and resolution.
