Outstanding storyline and performances, depicting how an otherwise normal person having been emotional affected by war experiences, is unable to effective assimilate the behavior of his love interest. In the 50's, homosexuality and pedophilia are seen by most of the lay public as a morally evil possession by dangerous spirits.

In love with Seberg, Beatty wants to be her knight in shining armor, unaware of the extent of what he was raised to see as unbridled depravity. As he desperately tries to understand her thinking, the logic of her mental processes become more acceptable to him.

The conflict between his desire and his moral compass push him to the edge, showing the danger of any mental health professional becoming involved with his patient. Generally omitted from Warren's film resume, like Mickey One, but a very memorable movie.

Especially, if you have been involved with someone under a doctor's care.
