Review of Le Doulos (1962) by Augusto A — 24 Jul 2009
Probably the closest thing to a classic american film noir in Melville's filmography, but still very french and very much Melville. I think I noticed a subtle sense of humor here and there. My only problem with the movie is the whole deal with Therese.
What happens to her seems a little drastic, and in my opinion kinda undermines one of the many changes in character Silien goes through in the movie. It just seemed to me like they didn't know what to do with the character, so they just decided to throw her off a cliff.
Literally. But my opinion on that plot point could change if I ever watch the movie again. Other than that, Belmondo's character arc is handled perfectly. His plan to clear his friend's name is a great watch.
In fact, there are so many cool moments and brilliantly shot sequences that I'm willing to let any narrative problems slide.
