Review of L.A. Takedown (1989) by Simon G — 04 Aug 2013
Remade as Heat in 1995, L.A. Takedown was Mann's original TV movie of what was to become (in Heat) his epic crime drama. The characters are lacking the depth which Pacino and De Niro would bring to the roles but as a blueprint for what was to come this is a decent enough "first draft" with an excellent shootout scene which still holds up today.
But at 90 minutes (Heat was close to 3 hours) Takedown feels rushed and spliced together roughly.
