Review of King of the Belgians (2016) by Joana L — 31 Mar 2017
My husband and I both loved this movie-- a mockumentary. It is an improbable roadtrip by a monarch and his staff, who are accompanied by a filmmaker. During the road trip, the King reflects upon duty, personal freedom, happiness, the loving as well as the dark side of life.
There are scenes of beauty and transcendence-- characters occasionally look like a part of a still life or tableau. This movie manages to be funny-- sometimes laugh out loud funny and other times just droll-- as well as thoughtful. You are left contemplating what it means to be alive and free.
