Review of Jubilee (2000) by Mark B — 03 Jul 2008
â??Jubileeâ?? was my only previous exposure to Jarman. In retrospect, it isnâ??t surprising to see why I didnâ??t make much effort to explore him further. As was the case in his debut, there are a handful of striking scenes, but much of it becomes tedious.
Thereâ??s no sympathy for these characters, so youâ??re left indifferent when various troubles befall them late in the film. The use of music is strong and it often becomes the highlight. My personal favorite scene couldâ??ve stood alone as an avant garde short.
I wish more of â??Jubileeâ?? couldâ??ve stayed closer to its tone. Still, Iâ??m intrigued to see what he has in store for his next feature.
