Review of Joy Division (2009) by John F — 20 Jul 2008
A definitive documentary to one of the most short lived but influential bands to ever come out of Manchester. What's so much more is the mystical aura of Ian Curtis' legacy. The enigmatic and haunting songs of Joy Division are at once full of upbeat post-punk vigor and a down trodden depressive ethereal longing.
The music and the hypnotic presence of Ian and his tragic suicide all seem to be entrapped in some kind of parapsychological mystery of the human heart and soul. And this documentary definitely has people who attest to Ian's ways of seemingly channeling the energy of his audience and his band.
On the other hand you hear from his band mates who seemed to be more pissed off at the inconvenience of his death than mystified or sadened. In any case, it's an excellent documentary that helps to illuminate one of music's most darkest stories.
