Review of Joy (2015) by Jacob D — 06 Oct 2016
Unevenly paced and unsettlingly clunky at times, Jennifer Lawrence is the only thing holding this film together. David O. Russell can't seem to settle on a perspective, clumsily wedging farce & magic realism into Joy's inspiring (and true) story of perseverance against the odds.
It's unclear exactly what message Russell is trying to convey with the motif of soap opera running throughout the film, at times it's cute and at others distracting.
Still worth seeing for the effort that Lawrence pours into every scene.
