Review of Johnny Suede (1991) by Zack B — 19 Mar 2013
Oh sure it has many flaws. At times it's incomprehensible and alien, as if Tom DiCillo was from Pluto or something. The characters are Lynchian quirky (Brad Pitt even has a conical pompadour reminiscent of Jack Nance's hairdo in Eraserhead), but not in a theatrical way that David Lynch is so masterful at presenting.
These characters are more one-note-weird, which, at times, is rather dull and unimaginative on the part of Tom DiCillo's writing. Nevertheless, this film has a camp delight to it, most likely because of the simmering surf soundtrack and a flawed though self-assured performance by Brad Pitt.
I also enjoyed seeing Nick Cave so creepily displayed on film. It was appropriate.
