Review of John Carter (2012) by Gregory P — 21 Jul 2013
An old-fashioned adventure. John Carter reminds me of the great swashbuckler movies of the 40s and 50s. There is a reluctant hero, an imperiled princess and a war to end. The story by Edgar Rice Burroughs was written even before his Tarzan stories and is the source material for much of modern SF adventure.
The pacing requires that you actually pay attention for the first half-hour, but that's a small price to pay for a wild adventure on a hostile planet with 4-armed barbarians, now isn't it? The performances range form adequate to great, and the ending is just about perfect.
Well worth a look if you're looking for a family-friendly adventure movie.
