Review of Japón (2003) by Michael C — 07 Oct 2008
Damn strange, this one. It kind of just "is" - it follows no rules, doesn't seem try to be anything in particular. For this it is fascinating and infuriating. I doubt there's anything to get, but in any case, I didn't get it.
A tale of a stranger visiting a village in the back of beyond in Mexico. Still leaves a thousand questions unanswered at the end. Some very good cinematographic moments but some shockers as well - it almost tries to be not likeable in any way at all but somehow the whole is way greater than the sum of its parts.
If you've a long afternoon or you're interested in watching something in your "film purist's" role, then maybe give it a go. Otherwise you might just end up annoyed.
Having said that, I keep wanting to give it a higher rating, it's that sort of mind-twisting flick.
